Physical Education: Kindergarten – Grade 2

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 2 participate in a structured physical education program that builds strength, coordination, teamwork, and lifelong fitness skills. Kindergarteners attend two 45-minute classes each week, while Grades 1 and 2 attend one 60-minute class weekly.

Each class follows a consistent three-part format:

  1. Warm-Up – Led by a class leader and includes jumping jacks, push-ups, sit-ups, leg stretches, a yoga pose, and a light jog or walk.
  2. Lesson Focus – Discussion, instruction, and guided practice of the day’s skill or activity.
  3. Closure – Cool down and reflect.

Skill Development

Students strengthen and refine fundamental motor skills while developing greater control, agility, and body awareness. Lessons emphasize:

  • Body Management and Movement: Locomotor and non-locomotor skills, spatial and body awareness, directionality, and sequencing.
  • Balance: Static, dynamic, and combined balance activities that enhance stability and control.
  • Rhythmic Movement: Gymnastics, tumbling, and interpretive movement that build rhythm and coordination.
  • Object Control:
    • Eye–hand coordination — dribbling, striking, throwing, catching, and fine motor precision.
    • Eye–foot coordination — punting, passing, kicking, dribbling, and trapping.
    • Integration of manipulative and non-manipulative movements.

Students demonstrate measurable growth in speed, agility, reaction time, coordination, and power through a variety of skill-based activities.

Health and Wellness

Students are introduced to key fitness concepts including cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and overall wellness. Lessons build understanding of how regular exercise supports health, energy, and long-term fitness.

Social and Emotional Growth

Physical education in these grades cultivates teamwork, sportsmanship, communication, and respect. Students learn to collaborate effectively, follow rules, and demonstrate responsibility while showing respect for themselves, their peers, and their environment.

Games and Activities

The President’s Fitness Challenge and engaging games such as Danger Dots, Pac-Man, Polo Ball, Shipwreck, Soccer, and more reinforce skills and challenge students to apply their abilities with enthusiasm.
