The Kindergarten through Grade 6 art curriculum at MAA is grounded in the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design, providing a comprehensive foundation for creative growth and artistic development. Each project reinforces these core concepts while allowing students to study a range of cultures, artists, and art movements that have shaped the visual arts.
Within each grade, students progress through lessons that build skill and technique across multiple media. They work with watercolor and tempera paints, colored pencils, oil pastels, markers, and cut paper to create both two- and three-dimensional works of art. Through this hands-on approach, students learn to communicate visual and sensory experiences more expressively.
As they move through the grades, students revisit key artistic concepts at increasing levels of sophistication, applying them with greater precision and independence. Topics of study include Line and Pattern, Shape, Color, Contrast and Emphasis, Movement and Rhythm, Value, Texture, Balance, Form, Space, Proportion, and Unity and Variety.
The school year concludes with the annual MAA Annual Art Show, a showcase of student achievement and creativity that highlights each child’s artistic growth and imagination.
